Who We Are:

Miami Nation Enterprises is the economic arm of the federally recognized Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. Its purpose is to pursue economic development opportunities for the good of the Miami Nation and its citizens. “Miami Federal” is a group of companies (all SBA certified as Tribally owned 8(a)s) providing construction, information technology, software development, facilities management, training, event management, and environmental services to both the Department of Defense and civilian agencies.

Position Overview:

The Controller will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team of Miami Federal and will operate in a Shared Service environment over the federal portfolio of companies. The Controller will be responsible for directing, managing, and coordinating all general accounting operations to include General Ledger, Payroll, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable, and all related fiduciary and financial record keeping and reporting matters. As a key member of our finance department, the Controller will play a crucial role in ensuring the financial integrity and compliance of our federal contracts.

Position: Controller - Miami Federal

Location: Reston, Virginia (This position offers flexibility but is a mostly in-person role)

Responsibilities:

  • Financial Oversight: Manage and oversee accounting operations and company finances, including active involvement in accounts payable, accounts receivable, revenue recognition, banking relationships, and cash flow management for Miami Federal's group of companies. Ensure the accurate and timely process of accounts payable, and cash management.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Develop and manage budgets for all federal businesses of Miami Federal including the individual contract budgets in each portfolio company, providing insightful forecasting and financial analysis to support strategic decision-making in collaboration with the broader financial team.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare, audit, and present accurate and timely financial reports. Analyze financial results to gain understanding of the organization's financial performance and communicate the financial results, offering valuable insights to guide senior management.
  • Compliance Management: Develop and implement internal processes to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, GAAP, and Corporate policy, with a focus on meeting the stringent requirements of the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA), and other relevant regulatory bodies. Interact with all outside audit agencies and functions as the primary contact for annual audit and tax information for the company's outside audit firm.
  • Mentorship and Performance Review: Act as a mentor for the accounting team, providing guidance, support, and expertise. Contribute to the performance review process, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Operational Systems Improvement: Collaborate with members of senior leadership to enhance the organization's operational systems. Contribute to and implement short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies and operating procedures. Offer financial insights and recommendations to optimize efficiency and effectiveness in federal contracting initiatives.
  • Internal controls: Establish and maintain internal control system to ensure the integrity of data and to ensure accurate recording keeping.
  • Process Implementation and Training: Drive the implementation of new financial processes, leveraging cutting-edge technological systems. Provide hands-on training to staff, ensuring a seamless transition and fostering a culture of adaptability and innovation.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, including government agencies, auditors, and contractors. Foster open communication and collaboration to enhance the corporation's standing within the federal contracting sector.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, with 5 years of experience in a similar role within the federal contracting sector.
  • Extremely detail orientated with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to interpret complex financial data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, apply discretion, practice unquestionable ethics.
  • Proficiency in Deltek CostPoint financial management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong understanding of Accounting Principles, knowledge of GAAP.
  • Mastery of general and subsidiary ledgers and financial statements.
  • Understanding of government contract compliance regulations found in the FAR, CAS preferred.
  • Good time management and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple initiatives and client requirements.
  • Experience with 8(a) companies especially with Tribal or Alaska Native Corporations preferred.
