LIFEGUARD I (SEASONAL) – NORTHERN BUTTES DISTRICT / LAKE OROVILLE SECTOR / LAKE OROVILLE STATE RECREATION AREA

“Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKs program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKs recipient in the comments area on the application. Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKs eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub. The Lifeguard I reporting location is Lake Oroville State Recreation Area at 400 Glenn Dr, Oroville CA 95966. The LG I works under the supervision of the Sector Supervising Ranger and under the direction of State Park Peace Officers or Lifeguard II, if applicable.

The Lifeguard I (Seasonal) position is the recruiting and training level for the seasonal lifeguard series. Under supervision, incumbents detect and rescue persons or vessels in distress; take command in emergencies; perform first-aid and resuscitation procedures; notify headquarters of accidents and rescues; prepare reports; remove hazards; assist the public and advise visitors of rules and regulations; operate, inspect and perform maintenance on emergency rescue equipment and vehicles; operate PBX switchboard and radiotelephone; and other related duties. This position will explain park policies and regulations to the visiting public; answers routine questions from the public; handle minor visitor complaints; coordinate occasional housekeeping activities; and checks park facilities (such as: swim beach, tower, rescue equipment, public safety first aid gear, and vehicles) to report problems. A Lifeguard I (Seasonal) must have the ability to follow directions; remain alert; analyze situations accurately; think and act quickly and take command in emergencies; establish and maintain good working relations; and communicate effectively.

This position is seasonal with an approximate start date of January 1, 2026, and extending through late 2026. The normal work hours are 10-hour shifts occurring between the hours of 8:00 am to 10:00 pm, up to five days per week including weekends, holidays and during special events; assigned days off may vary from month to month. This position can work 189 days in a 12 consecutive month period or a maximum of 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months per California Code of Regulation 265.1 . This position is designated as not telework eligible.

This is a uniformed position, and the successful candidates will be required to purchase and wear a State Parks uniform.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

Per California Code of Regulations (CCR) 599.961 , this is a sensitive position, and therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing. It should be noted that testing is not mandatory, but is allowed to be conducted only if and when there is a determination of reasonable suspicion as defined in CCR 599.962 .

Successful completion of the Department of Parks and Recreation seasonal lifeguard training program within one year of appointment.

Possession of (1) a Department of Parks and Recreation first-aid certificate or equivalent and (2) a Department of Parks and Recreation Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate or equivalent. An approved Department of Health Emergency Technician certificate may be substituted for both the required certificates. Applicants who do not possess these certificates will be admitted to the examination but they must produce evidence of the certificates before they can be considered for an appointment.
