The role:
The Material Industrial Engineer is an integral part to daily and future Global Supply Chain (GSC) operations. The Material Industrial Engineer will lead many of the Lean Material Strategies (LMS) initiatives at Spring Hill GPS including automated mobile equipment planning, execution, and sustainment, material flow optimization, warehousing and dock optimization, and labor optimization.
Work is of a technical nature and focused on making complex manufacturing processes more efficient, which involves understanding the systematic cross functionality of several departments including engine machining, engine assembly, and Global Supply Chain. Significant use of independent judgment is required, as well as the ability to think critically and creatively to solve problems and drive projects forward.
The Material Industrial Engineer will lead and support complex supply chain projects that involve collaboration between several in-plant departments, Headquarters engineering organizations, UAW team members, and third-party suppliers and contractors.
What you’ll do:
Drive improvements to material flow, including material storage and dock strategies, to support material planning metrics and rebalance opportunities
Develop optimized warehousing layouts to minimize job utilizations, maximize material flow efficiency, and ensure optimal material delivery routes
Collaborate with logistics teams to optimize dock schedules and parts management
Manage, plan, and execute large-scale supply chain projects that drive reductions to labor costs and increases to operational efficiencies
Support large-scale production projects that involve the introduction of robot cells, cobots, and other automated assembly line equipment
Coordinate with Headquarters engineering groups to develop business cases, Statements of Work (SOW), and Statements of Requirement (SOR) for new cost saving supply chain projects
Drive cross-functional collaboration with in-plant, Headquarters, and external partners to execute material automation initiatives, rebalance initiatives, and other projects
Participate in safety buyoff processes, including g-Risks and g-Comply, for new equipment and automation
Make programming, logic, and systematic changes to a fleet of automated mobile equipment
Maintain and write GSC time studies using GMOS, STDS, and APS
Review, write, and implement GSC standardized work to ensure efficient job functions
Provide root cause analysis for material automation faults and inefficiencies
Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for and provide guidance to a team of UAW material automation attendants
Analyze existing operations and drive continuous improvements (CI) to processes and jobs with collaboration from UAW team members
Maintain GSC productivity timelines, the LMS scorecard, and the LMS wall
Analyze data from material pull systems, such as PPD, to drive improvements, mitigate downtime events, and ensure floor accountability
Lead and support Operational Excellence projects
Solve complex GSC throughput problems
Monitor adherence to recommended Safety procedures and ergonomics guidelines
Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications):
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, or a related degree, or equivalent experience
5+ years of supply chain experience
3+ years of manufacturing experience
High level of interpersonal skills
High level of communication and project management skills
Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve complex problems
Experience leading large and difficult projects with a high level of autonomy
Experience with material flow optimization and warehouse layout design
Experience with labor optimization and time study analysis
Experience with data analytics or data visualization
Experience with computer-aided drafting and layout tools
Knowledge of material automation and functionality
Ability to work off-shift, weekends, or overtime to support project implementations or to make material automation programming changes
What will give you a competitive edge (Preferred Qualifications):
Master’s degree in engineering, business, or a related degree
Proficiency in material automation programming
Proficiency in understanding material automation lidar, camera, safety, and localization systems
Proficiency in understanding material automation job structures and routing
Proficiency in GMOS, STDS, and APS labor study tools
Proficiency in AutoCAD
Proficiency in human factors engineering, safety engineering, or ergonomic analysis
Proficiency with parts management tools and data, including MGO, PFEP, and PPL
Experience with Throughput Improvement Processes (TIP)
Experience working in a unionized manufacturing environment
Operational Excellence Faster Master or Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification
