Job Summary

The Akron Hometowner is seeking a motivated and curious part-time Newspaper Writer/Reporter to help cover local news, events, and the people of Akron and the surrounding community. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys storytelling, meeting new people, and being involved in their hometown.

Previous newspaper or journalism experience is preferred but not required. We are happy to train the right candidate who has strong writing skills, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in community journalism.

This is a paid, part-time position with flexible scheduling and the opportunity to grow within a locally owned media company.

Key Responsibilities

• Report on local news, community events, government meetings, schools, sports, and feature stories
• Conduct interviews with community members, local leaders, and organizations
• Write clear, accurate, and engaging articles following AP style (training provided)
• Take basic photos to accompany stories (phone photography is acceptable; training available)
• Work with editors to revise, edit, and finalize stories for print and digital publication
• Meet weekly deadlines
• Maintain accuracy, fairness, and strong journalistic standards in all reporting

Preferred Qualifications

• Writing experience in journalism, newspapers, communications, or related fields is preferred but not required
• Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
• Willingness to learn AP style and newsroom workflows
• Comfortable interacting with people and asking questions
• Basic computer skills, including email and word processing
• Photography or social media experience is a plus, but not required
