Road Construction Inspector (TG) | Salary Range: $24.39 – $30.60 / hourly; $50,926 – $63,892 / annually

Our Road Construction Inspector (Transportation Generalist) position performs daily assigned and routine work in contract administration, field inspection and field materials testing, and performs maintenance and operation of snow and ice control; and performs related work as required. Some examples of work for this position are listed below but not limited to the following:

Function: Contract Administration

Obtains representative samples of bituminous, concrete, aggregate, grading and base materials and performs appropriate tests to ensure quality assurance.

Performs the construction materials acceptance tests (such as gradations, density, air, beam, cylinder/and slump) in the field as required to ensure quality of materials.

Reads and interprets plans and specifications to ensure contractor compliance.

Checks the dimensions and tolerances of constructed roadway features to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.

Monitors the work of contractor personnel to ensure compliance with established processes, practices, and specifications.

Function: Design

Performs basic/routine technical computer-aided drafting and designing (CADD) in accordance with CADD data standards to meet deadlines.

Function: Snow & Ice

Maintains roadways for snow and ice control; removes snow from roadway and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.

Here are the Minimum Qualifications:

The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with one year of experience in a combination of the following areas:

Experience in contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction), bridge maintenance, bridge safety inspection, design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits, planning, pre-design, right of way, road/surface/roadside maintenance, snow/ice, surveys, and/or traffic engineering).

AND

A minimum of six months experience in performing design activities which must include computer aided drafting and design (CADD).

OR 

A two-year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or equivalent. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience, you must submit a copy of your transcripts.)

AND

Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Licenses: Valid MN Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction within 6 months of hire.
