A Better Balance is a national legal advocacy organization that uses the power of the law to advance justice for workers, so they can care for themselves and their loved ones without jeopardizing their economic security. Our expert legal team combats discrimination against pregnant workers and caregivers and advances supportive policies like paid sick time, paid family and medical leave, and fair and predictable scheduling. We remain steadfast in working to dismantle the intersectional forms of injustice that contribute to the structural inequality working families in this country face, including but not limited to, gender injustice, racial injustice, economic injustice, health injustice, and injustice against immigrants, LGTBQIA communities, and people with disabilities. Ensuring families of color have access to strong work-family policies—especially BIPOC women workers who are currently the least likely to have access to these policies due to centuries of institutionalized sexism and racism, systemic barriers to economic mobility, and pervasive discrimination—is a core principle of ABB’s work.
A Better Balance has fought for and won new paid leave laws and policies in states and localities around the country; important pregnancy, caregiving and breastfeeding rights at the federal, state and local levels, including passage of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act; inclusive protections for all families, including LGBTQ families; and victories on other economic justice issues throughout the country. Our advocacy work and legal efforts have gained national recognition in dozens of outlets including The New York Times, Washington Post, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

About the Opportunity
Building on nearly two decades of pioneering work and legislative impact protecting tens of millions of workers across the country, A Better Balance is poised to expand its reach and network of supporters and deepen its impact on workers and families. With work-family protections being front and center nationally, and with the leadership of our new President, Inimai Chettiar, there is an incredible opportunity and momentum for ABB to amplify and broaden our work in work-family justice.
Central in this next phase for the organization, is the Vice President of Development, who will build on our eighteen years of growth and impact to lead the strategy development, systems building, and revenue increase to achieve our vision. The VP of Development will leverage our strong foundation of policy, litigation, and direct services impact and the current moment of national interest in worker and family issues. This individual will increase and diversify our philanthropic revenue, increase our profile and broaden our relationships in the local and national philanthropic community, maximize our Board of Directors, and build the fundraising infrastructure needed to take ABB’s work to the next level. The VP of Development will report to the President, collaborate closely with the board, and the leadership team, and directly supervise the Development Manager. The VP of Development will serve as an essential external ambassador of the organization, facilitate others to serve as ambassadors to funders, bring critical strategic and operational expertise to our fundraising function, and support tactical, on-the-ground aspects of fundraising from writing and editing to preparing verbal pitch materials as we evolve our revenue strategies.

Fundraising Leadership :
The VP of Development is responsible for designing and executing the overall fundraising strategy with the purpose of increasing and diversifying revenue, building upon our foundational institutional relationships, and strengthening our efforts in prospecting, stewarding, and developing additional funding streams. The VP of Development will build and manage strong relationships with the internal team, current funders and board members, and prospective funders; assess and improve our fundraising infrastructure and processes; represent A Better Balance externally and position and prepare the President and leadership team to be effective fundraisers.

Board Management & Development
The VP of Development will work closely with our President to further develop and engage our board of directors, increasing board diversity, and fundraising activities and serve as a touch point alongside the President between the Board and staff.

People & Project Management :
The VP of Development directly manages a Development manager providing strategic guidance on all written materials and grant proposals, as well as collaborates closely with the Communications team to increase ABB’s visibility, network, and impact. Additionally, the VP of Development will operationalize fundraising work through start-to-finish systems and project management.

Our benefits include:The salary for this position is $140,000 - $160,000.
Location & Travel:
The preferred location for this candidate is New York City. Candidates in other locations will be highly considered, given the organization’s remote working environment, with the requirement that the Vice President of Development should expect to travel to New York City approximately once a month, with additional travel for funder meetings or events.
