Job Description

Preble Street is a dynamic, innovative, and progressive 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization with 300+ team members. Our team members work diligently every day to fulfill the agency’s mission of providing accessible, barrier-free services to empower people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty, and advocate for solutions to these challenges. For 50 years, our work has been about making Maine a just place for every person who lives here. We believe that families living in poverty should not have to go hungry, that no one should have to be on the street when they are tired or sick or cold, that youth who have no home should not have to live in fear and danger. If you believe this too, and have extensive HR leadership experience, we may be a great match!

Preble Street is seeking a new position, our Vice President of Human Resources, to plan and oversee the organization’s HR strategy, including workforce planning and development, employee relations, labor relations, compensation and benefits, staff training, and risk management. This position ensures that our people practices and policies are in alignment with Preble Street’s mission, values, and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, while complying with legal requirements. In addition to leadership of the HR team and function, as a member of the leadership team, the VP of HR is a key participant in strategic planning for the organization.

This position can offer you the opportunity to:

  • Experience values-aligned leadership with an organization committed to improving lives
  • Take HR to the next level at an organization that is truly making a difference in the community
  • Influence the strategic direction of a highly respected non-profit organization
  • Directly impact the well-being of over 300 team members and indirectly affect the well-being of over 11,000 people we served in Maine last year
  • Hone your leadership skills as a leader of a robust HR function

What’s needed to be successful in this position:

  • A deep commitment to Preble Street’s social justice mission
  • 12+ years of experience in Human Resources leadership and management, with at least five years of experience leading an HR function with multiple team members
  • Experience as a member of an Executive Leadership Team, including leading a talent strategy that supports the organizational strategy, and extensive experience coaching leaders
  • Relevant education, with a graduate degree preferred
  • Social services/nonprofit experience preferred
  • Extensive understanding and application of Maine labor laws
  • Experience with labor relations and engagement with a union preferred

The VPHR works onsite in Portland, Maine during regular business hours, with some schedule flexibility and hybrid schedule options available. Travel to other locations in Bangor and Lewiston is needed on at least a quarterly basis.

This is a full-time position with a salary of $150,000, with generous paid time off, insurance, and a retirement plan. Benefits include:

  • 4 weeks/160 hours (accrued) vacation time, 12 days/96 hours (accrued) sick time, 2 days/16 hours personal time, 12 paid holidays
  • Health insurance with 100% employer-paid option; dental insurance with 100% employer-paid option; vision insurance; employer-paid life and disability insurance
  • 403(b) retirement plan with employer match
